The reason is not technology. That is a mistake. The reason is people want to believe something that might save them.
It happened in Russia in the 19th Century (Isaiah Berlin, writing in the 1950s, “The role of the Intelligentsia”. It happens everywhere.
People are optimists. Trump People are optimists. If we believe in a better future we need to explain it. And if we don’t believe in it we need to find a new mythology that can take us there.
