Web services is killing open source software

All packaged software (think “Microsoft Office”) is suffering at the hands of web app. If you can make it a web app, you can distribute it so cheaply that you can charge little. And then people don’t want to buy packaged/downloaded software.

This is killing the open source projects I like best: Mozilla Thunderbird and even Firefox.

Thunderbird has stagnated – nobody uses it. They use the Gmail web app. Makes sense why. But Gmail is not open source.

Neither is Google Docs.

So: web apps are killing open source. (Even while they use it, behind the scenes.)

There is a problem with open source and it’s “you can’t sell it” model; namely, you can USE it and offer it for commercial purposes ‘free’.
