Fake stars in github projects, research note 2/x re: Vincent Hus and OpenSRE

I recently checked out the project OpenSRE which is derived from Tracer.bio’s pivot. I even forked it. They are raising money so I thought, hmm…is this actually one of the world’s fastest growing open source projects like they say?

I pinged some VC friends and here are some of their reactions (anonymized):

Hey Amol – nice to hear from you! I looked into this a lot after my companies scraper started using stars as a signal for velocity. It’s quite easy to buy them and for the price is probably excellent ROI if you’re a founder looking for attention. This one has one big bump day that’s a little suspicious – I’ve not built a tool for this but I suspect you can look for links from reddit/hackernews/slashdot and overlay them on this timeline to see unexplained bumps – https://emanuelef.github.io/daily-stars-explorer/#/tracer-cloud/opensre

The blocking from the project seems super shady though. I can’t ever recall seeing that happen unless there was some kind of flame war in the issues/discussions.

I didn’t look at the deal this time around b/c am still fundraising (long story!) but I had looked at his last company.
